In the late spring of 2004, the Guantanamobile Project first began filming interviews with the legal team involved with the upcoming Supreme Court Case regarding the indefinite detention of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay. Those interviews were followed by others with human rights advocates, detainee families, and eventually with a series of 'man-on-the-street' interviews in the South and Midwest that tried to determine what, if anything, people knew about what was going on at Guantanamo.

Since then, Project members have traveled around talking about Guantanamo and showing clips from these interviews. Over the past few months, we've realized that the situation has changed so much -- and in most ways, changed for the worse -- that our documentary project needs some serious updating. We're in the process of trying to figure out who we might want to interview, and how to try to continue to tell a coherent story about Guantanamo in the wake of all that has happened over the past few months.

In the meantime, this website will continue to serve as a resource for anyone interested in finding out more about Gitmo. We will continue to update our news blog and the timeline and FAQS in the "Learn" section of the site. And many of the interviews we conducted in 2004/2005 are online and available for viewing -- just go to the "Interviews" sections for clips.

If you're interested in learning more about what we did in on the road, page through the "Project Update" weblog for a chronicle of our adventures with our mobile media van. And if you'd like to get in touch with us for any reason, contact us at followthebus@guantanamobile.org. We'd be happy to hear from you and answer any questions about the site.

The Guantanamobile Project interviewed Baher Amzy, American lawyer for the German-Born Turkish detainee Murat Kurnaz, shortly after his return from a visit to Kurnaz in Guantanamo. Kurnaz, who has been at Guantanamo since early 2002, became the focus of a fair amount of media attention

after Federal District Court Judge Hens Green noted a discrepancy between the material in the unclassified portion of his Combatant Status Revew proceedings and the classified portion; namely, that the unclassified version referred to incriminating evidence against Kurnaz that didn't seem to exist. The CSRT transcript also alleged the Kurnaz had connections to a "suicide bomber" who turned out to be a friend of Kurnaz's who had been cleared of all connections to terrorism. Amzy, a law professor at Seton Hall Law School, became one of the first lawyers to visit a detainee after joining Kurnaz's legal team last October: he and German civil rights lawyer Bernhard Docke have worked to free Kurnaz and return him to his home town of Bremen, Germany.

Strossen said that the successful lawsuit had produced "about thirty thousand pieces of paper," including FBI emails suggesting serious conflicts between the FBI and DOD regarding interrogation tactics.

On February 13, The Guantanamobile Project interviewed Mark Dow, author of American Gulag (UC Press) about the ways in which the current detention situation at Guantanamo reminds some of the way in which Haitian refugees were treated at the base in the early 1990s. Dow, who spent time in Guantanamo interviewing Haitians, also pointed to similarities between the current adminstration's attempts to preserve the base as a "lawless zone" and attempts by the first Bush and Clinton administrations to keep the base outside of the reach of American courts.
